From photography to real estate

Deborah ran a successful photography business for over 25 years before moving into real estate, which is why the presentation of every listing matters so much to her (one reviewer noted she can take very professional shots of a property herself). She learned the business from her mother-in-law, Helen Winer, and the two worked together for about five years as the first Winer Team. Since 2021 she has worked alongside her son, Jamie Winer.

What is an agent? When we started our journey I thought I knew that answer. After purchasing numerous homes my husband and I felt we were ‘experts’. We had a handful of agents throughout the years and were very lucky with each of them. When we were selling, they each came through with a good price and we never lost a bidding war on a house we loved. They were all kind, professional, smart and motivated…And then we hired Debby. When we asked Debby to put our house up for sale she went all out. As I am now aware, that’s the only speed she knows. It started with the professional photos, then the continuous open houses and showings. All great…all expected, but then the unexpected. Unexpectedly…I needed to take our house off the market. Unexpectedly…the disappointment, frustration and anger I was anticipating from Debby never came. Unexpectedly…the anxiety I had for undoing everything that was already done was melted away with Debby’s calm, understanding and “let’s get it done” approach . A year later we needed to sell again as I was offered a job that came with a house. Debbie took us back on with the same enthusiasm as she had the first time around. She sold the house for the exact amount that we wanted and then wished us well in our new house. Unfortunately the job wasn’t what it turned out to be and my family found itself with no place to live...and then my father died. I was very sad and confused as to where to live. I said to Debby that I needed to be in the most beautiful, tranquil place possible while I mourn. I asked for a rental while we figured out where we want to buy next. Debby found us a beautiful 3 bedroom bungalow on Lake Wilcox in Richmond Hill complete with ducks that came up to our back door and a campfire pit on the shoreline . We knew this place would be temporary but it was so amazing that we were in no rush to leave. So then Debby received her next challenge. I said to her that I would not leave unless she could top the “Lake House”. We handed her a list made up of all four of our wishes for a dream home. It was September and my goal was to be in our permanent home by the next school year. We ended up seeing over 40 houses…from Richmond Hill to Newmarket…from Old Thornhill to Aurora…from Whitchurch–Stouffville to Unionville…from Mussleman Lake to Preston Lake to Lake Willcox. When Debby said she’s a relocation specialist she’s not kidding. For a family that has never ventured more than a few blocks from Bathurst Street we needed her guidance. From Architecture to water systems to schools to tennis courts to communities, Debby had the whole picture for each neighbourhood she introduced us to. Debby picked me up with a smile on her face each and every time and never let on that she may be overwhelmed by our unattainable list. She kept our dream alive and let us be the ones to modify or compromise. Debby was always booking the next showing before the door was even closed on the last house. “The patience of a saint” I would say time and time again! Then the fateful day happened. Debby suggested Markham Village end it was there at that house number three was it! Debby took us through both the saddest and most stressful year of our lives. She helped turn lemons into lemonade and for that we will be forever grateful. An agent sometimes needs to be more than professional, smart and motivated. They may also need to be a confidant, shoulder to cry on, a rock in your storm, a therapist, a cheerleader, all the while having the patience of a saint. Our agent was an angel when that’s exactly what we needed. I will recommend Debby to anyone who will listen. April

I highly, highly recommend Deborah Winer! The task of putting a house up for sale for someone who has lived in it for 50 years is a huge undertaking with numerous details to tend to, and even greater challenges given the recent change in the real estate market. But Deb professionally and calmly handled all of this and we were thrilled with the result. Along the way, she was always available to answer questions, guide us when needed, and personally helped us with so many things (even recommending a great moving company!) it is impossible to list them all... but suffice it to say you can depend on Deb and she will never let you down. I also note that she treats everyone, buyers and sellers, with the utmost respect and honesty and this was very important for us. Thanks Deb!

Deborah helped our family sell a home that needed a lot of updating in a difficult market. She helped with every step of the renovating process and was always there to help with an appointment, a pick-up, and an order. She recommended a great contractor and stager, she is also a photographer and able to take very professional shots of the property for the listing. She was extremely patient and explained every step of the process, and worked hard to get a fair deal. We would definitely recommend Deborah to anyone looking to buy or sell a home in Toronto.
